Will undertake the development and application of technologically advanced methods based on virtual reality for distraction of attention, for the alleviation of chronic pain. TV3 Marat? Catalunya, (2008-2011).

Transcending Reality - Activating Virtual Environment Responses through Sensory Enrichment (Contract 227985) European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, 2009-2014.  These ERC grants are provided to established researchers for pioneering ideas that combine high risk with high-impact potential.

Augmented Multi-Modal Naturally-Networked Gatherings, is a four year FP7 EU collaborative project (#248620) which started on Jan 1st 2010. The science and technology developed in BEAMING will give people a real sense of physically being in a remote location with other people, and vice versa - without actually physically travelling.

Research Encompassing Sensory Enhancement, Neuroscience, Cerebral-Computer Interfaces and Applications - a 4 year EU Integrated Project, 2006-2009. (PI Mel Slater, who is also coordinator of the 14 partner PRESENCCIA project).

Immersive Multi-Modal Interactive Presence ? a 4 year EU Integrated project, 2006-2009, partner. (PI, Mel Slater).

Multimodal Immersive Motion Rehabilitation with Interactive Cognitive Systems, FP7-ICT-2007-1, Objective 1.2.1: Cognitive Systems, Interaction, Robotics, no. 215756, 2008-2010. (PI, Mel Slater).

In addition Mel Slater holds the following research grants at University College London:

Visual and Behavioural Fidelity of Virtual Humans with Applications to Bystander Intervention in Violent Emergencies - UK EPSRC EP/F030355/1 - 2008-2010 (?335,451) (started 2008 at UCL), Mel Slater Principal Investigator and scientific leader of this 3 partner project.

Empathic avatars: input, processing and output of emotional state (EPSRC) ?295,110, started October 2005 (PI Mel Slater).

Performing Presence: from the Live to the Simulated (AHRB) with Exeter University Performing Arts, (started January 2006) (PI, Mel Slater).

Presence in Virtual Light Fields (EPSRC) ?513,609, November 1st 2004-2007. This project will continue the Virtual Light Field research, and also carry out experimentation that examines people's responses to being in virtual environments with global illumination effects (PI, Mel Slater).

The main goal of the project is to carry out multidisciplinary research that will result in technology that radically improves the visual appearance and behaviour of virtual characters (avatars), while streamlining the production pipeline and keeping them customizable and affordable. This will have a relevant impact in 1) industries (such as movies or games) 2) academia (by advancing the state of the art in the related research fields) and 3) neuroscience (by using the avatars in novel experiments about presence in virtual environments). EU 4 years collaborative project which started on 01-09-2010, Contract Number PIAP-GA-2009-251415, FP7-People.

The innovative use of Virtual Reality to increase Human comfort by changing the PERception of Self and space.
This FP7 Transport Aeronautics project carries out research leading to designs of passenger space for aircraft for the year 2050. This involves virtual reality systems for individual passengers that allows them to experience their space in novel ways, and interact in real-time with people on the ground (such as family) in real-time.
